Process Innovation for businesses will not have a positive impact if the objective of that innovation is focused on reducing cost and improving efficiency. This has been done to business processes for more than 30 years now. The more commonly used phrase has been “process improvement”. If we are now talking “process innovation”, let us look at what impact that innovation in the process will have on business goals that really matter. And all business goals can be summarised into, “Sustainable improvement of revenue, market share and profitability” for the business. So any process innovation should be taken up only if it impacts at this level.

I agree with Sameer’s point. Optimising business processes is, in most cases, for the purpose of improving a business outcome. Creating efficiency in a process and translating this to a cost reduction assures the same outcome from the process. Do more, do quicker, do better with the efficiency created. They are customer outcomes.

I concur with the sentiments shared herein - with the main misconception around process innovation mistakenly hinged solely upon cost reduction. The catchy phrase "customer/micky in the middle" often preludes an exercise that has very little to do with the client and a lot to do with the bottom line. This is not to imply the two cannot be achieved concurrently. It requires an honest review of why we attempt to innovate processes in the first place. Far too many times entities within an organization will see this as an opportunity to tick a box, and thereby miss out on an opportunity to address client issues and in the process improve efficiency and profitability.

It is always a good idea to have utmost clarity on the need for process innovation. This need can be uncovered by asking WHY 5 times, which is a time tested method of root cause analysis mentioned above. Finally after this analysis we should be able to align the purpose of the particular process innovation at hand to one of the business objectives of improving Revenue, Market Share or profitability for the organisation.
