1 Soil Liquefaction Mechanism

Soil liquefaction occurs when three main conditions are met: the soil is loose and granular, the soil is saturated or nearly saturated with water, and the soil is subjected to cyclic or dynamic loading. The loading can be caused by earthquakes, blasting, pile driving, or traffic. When the loading occurs, the soil particles tend to rearrange and densify, increasing the pore water pressure and reducing the effective stress. The effective stress is the difference between the total stress and the pore water pressure, and it determines the shear strength and stiffness of the soil. When the pore water pressure rises to equal or exceed the total stress, the effective stress becomes zero or negative, and the soil loses its resistance to deformation and flow.

2 Soil Liquefaction Evaluation Methods

When evaluating the potential for soil liquefaction in a given site, there are several methods to choose from depending on the available data and the desired accuracy. Simplified empirical methods are based on correlations between field measurements and past occurrences of liquefaction, providing a factor of safety that indicates the likelihood of liquefaction. Examples of these methods include the Seed and Idriss (1971) method, the Youd et al. (2001) method, and the Idriss and Boulanger (2014) method. Advanced numerical methods offer a more detailed representation of soil response, but require more input data and computational resources. 3 Soil Liquefaction Mitigation Techniques
