Coaching is an investment—at least that’s what we are told. So what smart investor looks for that investment to have a profitable return at the end of a 6 month engagement? The idea defies our understanding of human development and adult learning. Is the leader better equipped for complexity? What’s the test? Is the leader more resilient? Can we take a quiz for this? Is the leader more empathetic? There must be a tool to measure this. No. We are not racing machines to be oiled and tweaked for higher performance. So I pose a serious question: Whats the ROI of the expansion of a human soul? When done well, coaching does more than help a leader reach some corporate goal—it makes them richer contributors to society. Measure that.
