As you grow your number of servers in your fleet, they tend to drift apart. Avoid manual configuration on your server-fleet, as a single instance that has drifted, will eventually corrupt your state. Use a IaC and adopt a branching-model, that fits your workflow, be-it trunk-based (feature-flags) or environment-branches for long-lived features. Keep-in-mind, that loved-lived branches, drift themselves. Attempt, to keep your commits short and to the point, getting into the mainline branch, as early as possible - without blocking your peers.

It can be fantastically hard, to test infrastructure although the advent of new infrastructure-software, allows for (atleast) unit-testing. In my experience an integration-environment, can aid in testing a software-release, regardless of branching-model. A normal workflow, for building ha-applications, tend to start out as a production-proof-of-concept, that leads to a working production-environment. By using IaC, you can tear down a proof-of-concept, before it gets trapped in a production environment and rebuild it, fixing evolutionary changes as you do. When you have this in place, its fairly easy to integrate into your deployment pipeline, beit cloud, onprem or a hybrid setup - allowing you to do incremental changes.

There exists, a number of different options when dealing with scalability and security of your applications. Remember, that old problems of network-hopping exists today, even inside software defined network, as many network policies lack the ability to do east-west segmentation. With the advent of cloud, it has become increasingly easy to roll-out of new networks, thus amplifiying the problem with segmentation. Adopt a mentality, with compartmentalisation, regardless of nat/bridge/cloud/hybrid/on-prem and use the crossing of a network-barriere with regards to ha-linux applications as a source of zone. Insist on using, atleast two-or-more in your fleet, and the subsequent solutions to the problems, as a result should be adequate.

Align yourself with a package management system or adopt a mentality of updating your fleet, using batches. Segment the fleet into two-or-more groups, preferably aligned around its priority. Although, business models align themselves around production-environments, use the integration-environment, to test updated packages, before rolling those to the production environments. This is particular true, if your workloads are mixed customer applications, dependent on system applications, thus sharing the responsibility between yourself and the customers. Build this into your favourite IaC, allowing you to update segments at a time and monitoring functionality and performance.

A grand-old-saying, is: "Never use the POC". This is true. Having built your production enviroment, regardless of resource-control technology, insist on setting aside time, to rebuilding it again.
