What are the best practices for ensuring the longevity of social impact initiatives?

Stakeholders in all dimensions need to be part of the solution and programs. The vision needs to be a shared vision with the stakeholders. Extraordinary patience about outcomes is really important and change needs time and persistence. Quick outcomes are not always the metrics that are necessarily meaningful. And if something isn’t working, have the bravery to admit it and pivot.

Your mission and vision need to sit in the context of the problem you’re solving. There are a lot of nice visions in the social impact space. Don’t just have a nice vision of a better world: show a better future. Do this by knowing the trends, people and incentives that matter in your chosen sector.

Coining a Vision and a focused Mission is the way to achieve a social impact. There is a plethora of issues that need to fixed in the world. Basis the core strengths of an organization and the ability to positively contribute the social responsibility area is determined. All the best practices ( personal skills of the volunteers, monetary contributions)and efforts can then be chanallised to achieve the desired impact. The impact that becomes a part of the larger vision for a better world!!

Along with mission and vision, incorporating and considering your theory of change during initiative plans is crucial. This outlines the framework of direct actionable steps, thus linking your efforts to desired outcomes. Allow theory of change to act as a blueprint, detailing how actions lead to impact that aligns with your mission and larger vision. This plan clarifies the cause-and-effect relationships between activities, expected changes, and ultimate goals. Vision, mission, and theory of change go hand in hand and are all equally important in forming strong social impact initiatives that produce material outcomes.

Well defined mission and vision can be built upon by focused programs that serve the mission. The key is to be much more thoughtful and precise about these overarching purpose statements than the shape of the program and strategy. This releases pressure of success at first attempt and promotes innovation and ongoing ideation in activities.

Another thing to plan for sustainability is a mechanism of innovate and evolution. Given the mission driven nature of nonprofits, it is highly probable to get attached to a set of tactics that prove to be impactful. It’s ironic that organizations that exist to change the world in some way can sometimes become reluctant to change themselves. The reality, however, is that the context evolves and so do the challenges you are trying to address. As such, it is important to innovate, transform, and evolve. It’s best done proactively and habitually to maintain staff enthusiasm, donor commitment, and most of all, to continue being impactful.

Ensuring the longevity of social impact initiatives hinges on strategic sustainability planning. This entails a holistic approach encompassing financial models, governance structures, human resources, partnerships, and scalability. A realistic plan for income generation, cost management, accountability, talent retention and development, collaborative partnerships, and adaptability to changing needs is crucial. Sustainability goes beyond immediate impact, safeguarding the initiative's ability to persist and thrive, creating lasting positive change in response to evolving societal challenges.

It's important to understand your business and consider how a social impact initiative can benefit your current strategy. Keep in mind the key drivers of your business, such as reducing costs, mitigating risks, enhancing your brand or reputation, and increasing revenue. Don't underestimate the potential impact of a social initiative on areas where your business needs improvement. To ensure that everyone is on board, adopt the same mindset as your business leaders when it comes to developing a social impact strategy. Track your progress, measure results, and report regularly so that your MT can make informed decisions. This approach will allow them to treat these issues like any other strategic problem.

When sharing your story make sure to dig deep or click two levels into the narrative. Test, by putting another organization's name in front of the text. The story, approach and impact should all tie to your unique value proposition and mission. Consistency in branding, progress over time, and making the story about not only that one moment in time, but how it connects to broader communities or others makes the impact memorable. Additionally for board, beneficiaries, and advisors leveraging industry benchmarks and studies as point of reference is helpful context.

Measuring impact is a crucial component of organisational development. What is working well and what needs improvement. Communicating positive impact requires skill and ability in sharing relevant information to other providers and community of the work you deliver and the social return on investment. Social Return on Investment framework offers seven principles for measuring social impact: Involve stakeholders Understand what changes Value the things that matter Only include what is material Do not over-claim Be transparent Verify the result Social return on investment has also delivered the dollar benefit and rate of return for funding opportunities within the not for profit sector.

Communication is a measure of its own, and innovation provides a process to maintain audience and stakeholders with narratives and histories.

Transparency is key—share both successes and challenges. Regularly update stakeholders through reports, presentations, and social media to foster trust and maintain engagement.

Understanding the community you aim to impact is paramount for genuine and sustainable change. It's about acknowledging their lived experiences, challenges, needs and goals. Centering efforts on the needs the community speaks about builds both trust and relevance. A community centered approach fosters sustainability by ensuring initiatives align with the community's values, wants, and current realities. Engaging and empowering stakeholders within that community magnifies impact, as it's a collaborative journey shaped by their insights and aspirations. This inclusive approach not only empowers the community but also ensures that the initiatives are meaningful, impactful, and have long-term resonance.

Some stakeholders are more engaged than others and their level of engagement often comes from their motives. For example, an internal executive overseeing the project may be more engaged because their job depends on it. Alternatively, an external partner with a small financial stake might have less engagement and may not want every detail of what’s going on.? Respect specialism and partner well. As corporations what we can do is limited and we are rarely the experts in the room when it cones to social impact. Work with good organisations and listen to them. They know how to make your resources work for their people long term.

Stakeholder buy-in will always be crucial to any decisions. Quick reminder to always use data to support any pitches/ suggestions. Social impact does have measurable metrics and it’s important to present these, as a way of encouraging stakeholder trust and buy-in.

I strongly believe in the quote, "Nothing for us, without us." Engaging the individuals and key populations you are serving through a social impact initiative is key in ensuring you understand what will reach and speak to them versus what will not. Results are often key in propelling work forward. By engaging the community, you can not only be intentional with your efforts but create solutions that will continue to be of service to the impacted individuals over a longer period of time.

Do not be afraid to use the available technologies to enhance your work in social impact. Sometimes the industry views this as a “nice to have” and don’t believe the same investments made with “corporate marketing” should be applied here. So treat social impact as a viable and important arm of operations.

Innovation and adaptability are twin engines driving the success of any initiative. Embrace a culture of innovation by encouraging creative thinking and exploring new approaches. Regularly assess your strategies and be willing to adapt to changing circumstances. Stay attuned to emerging trends, technologies, and community needs.

Implementing my own First Nation and Indigenous strategies is also a part of empowering communities in regions or territories that we are most associated with and familiar with. Social initiatives bring with them ways and change and accommodate a transition from one generation to the next. The opportunities are indicators of change taking risks and collaborating with new social and sustainable markets as a part of the network relationships.

To generate a lasting social impact, it is necessary to innovate and adapt to changes. Innovation seeks new ways of creating and delivering the impact, using new technologies, methods or models. Adaptation responds to the needs and contexts of the stakeholders, adjusting the strategies, services or products. Innovation and adaptation allow an initiative of social impact to remain relevant, competitive and effective.

One of the very important things to take into account is how after doing a lot, when it still feels like there's a lot left- with a feeling of being overwhelmed, it is imperative to remind ourselves to slow down and take it one step at a time. Being present, aware and doing our best will still have a far more sustainable impact than hurrying and trying to reach all our goals as fast as possible (in fact, it'll lead to burnout sooner or later). TLDR: it's important to remember that Rome wasn't built in a day!

Ultimately, a continuous learning mindset, informed by both successes and failures, forms the bedrock for sustained social impact, ensuring initiatives remain agile, relevant, and capable of creating enduring positive change.

Partnerships, good governance, and community buy-in! No enterprise should be operate under the assumption that any given social issue can be tackled alone. It takes cross-sector cooperation to be successful in the long-run. Too often we see initiatives/projects/ventures working in silos, based on their industry, their investors, etc. Co-operation and community involvement/engagement is where the real, lasting impact has the highest chances of success.

#2 on this list should be leadership. If there is one factor that determines success or failure, lasting change vs fleeting success, abundance or scarcity of resources, it's executive and board leadership. The who matters more than the what.

Governance is an important thing to consider. If your social impact is delivered through a company or nonprofit, who controls that organizations mission and strategy? Who is protecting the impact today? Who decided how it evolves? This is easy to neglect when programs are new, but essential to have in place down the road.
