Your first sentence wrote everything that is mainly and mostly missing. Once the User Requirement Specification is vague, and Copy+Paste and PM don't understand their own requirements, it is hard to see clear and specific definitions of what you want to test. A key to successful are: - Know your procedures, - Know your regulatory requirements, - Know your product, - Know your system, - KNOW WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM THE SYSTEM, - Know all possible risks, - Involve dedicated people, - Do not be afraid to ask. Mostly every time I fall into a circuit of problems, where the PM copies and pastes the requirements, without any thinking from other projects. Once you ask him, what these requirements mean, for 98% I will get an answer: You shall know.

Virtual baseline is good to check some inputs and outputs from the testing, and how the Process Control System shall act in case of some simulations. But, virtual testing, i.e., a digital twin is not a full testing of the Process Control System, as there are no "human-error" counts - i.e., wrong input/output wiring, broken wires, wrong cable identifications, etc. The most appropriate way is to test the Process Control System in its place physically. There can be some hybrid, as I mentioned, that uses virtual testing to check some dangerous alarms before testing it on a live Process Control System. But mostly in virtual testing, you will get problems, and the problem is, that you need to avoid the safety section.

Creating a Test Plan without the Process Control System knowledge is a double-sided sword, which can on one side hurt you, and the second side can make you shine. The Test Plan always depends on multiple factors, - User Requirements Specifications - Risk Assessments, - Cooperation of departments, - Cooperation of suppliers, - Understanding of the system, - Understanding of the vision, - Understanding of the product, - Understanding of the regulations. Scheduling is the second part of it. Because the main iceberg is mentioned above. You cannot plan anything, since you can't do your primary job well. As I always tell, TRASH IN = TRASH OUT.

Totally agree with this section. It just needs to be mentioned, that you need to understand all of the set of steps. So there shall be no vague, or misleading test steps, that cannot be applied to the selected Process Control System. Or, the test step, which can be written in general, where multiple understandings can be applied. ( The often mistake in Installation Qualifications ).

The consideration, to execute a very good, and non-stressful functional testing is to : - Continuous learning ( Lessons Learned from previous projects) - Understanding of the requirements - Understanding of the regulation Requirements, - Understanding of the company procedures, - Understanding of the product, - Understanding of the RISKS, - Understanding of the Project Management. Once all know, what we are expecting from the Process Control System, it will take less stress, meetings, follow-up meetings, and other non-added-value things during the project. And the last thing is : - Do not shy to ask anyone for help, - Do not pretend, that you know everything, - Do not blame anyone for your faults, - Take responsibility for your actions.
