What are best practices for ensuring equal input during the conceptual design process?

Trick question - As a hired artist you don't get equal input during the conceptual process, you have a dialog as an artist, you have qualified input, of course. But a hired mouse should realize they don't have ownership of their designs, and you shouldn't be attached to your efforts as if you did. This is the first step to being able to use and accept criticism from your client positively and effectively - making the result better and making you a better designer.

Defining a clear design brief - stating the problem and the goal, the end user or the target market - is the first essential step towards an effective design solution. A clear design brief enables brainstorming in the right direction as well as defining clear stages of a design project, which can then be owned by different members of the design team.

Most of our culture today, being competitive, prioritizes loudness and individuality of expression. As long as one operates from this mindset, it is difficult to have equal input during any creative process, let alone the conceptual. However, it makes for good business to stay open to insights that come from the most unexpected places. In practices like design and architecture, there is an asymmetric imbalance of power between countless stakeholders - clients, suppliers, contractual, and labor who can all be encouraged to become more vocal by fostering a culture of active listening. Whatever concepts emerge, are gradually negotiated into reality.

Establish early on what success looks like - not necessarily what a solution looks like but how the team will know they have achieved their goals. This can be both qualitative and quantitative. It will help evaluate ideas later in the process.

Silent critique is a useful way to solicit feedback from a large group and give everyone a chance to provide input. Participants write their feedback in a document or a design file and the group can focus their discussion on topics that warrant a larger discussion.

Some ground rules we follow in our design team - each idea must be written down and discussed, the feedback is to improve the outcome of the project, and must never be personal. Irrespective of the experience or background, each member of the design team puts their ideas up for feedback and constructive criticism, keeping the focus strictly on the problem at hand and away from personal judgement.

This is a fascinating discussion. Let me use the example of a doctor to make a point. When you see a physician, your going to present a personal problem or situation to an expert. That expert utilizes what they've learned and applied through years of training to find the right solution. However, before any triage can be conducted, they have to listen to what ails their patient. This is what a designer does during the discovery phase. You see, I make recommendations based on years of expertise, knowledge and experience. There is a dance between client and designer, however only one person can take the lead. This is important for young designers to understand the balance of power. You serve your patrons, but you are the expert.
