In my opinion and experience awareness training is lacking the pedagogical approach that is applied across all other sectors of learning. Analytical data should be applied and guide the content of the training, adopt proven techniques that lend to engaged learning, and move beyond just awareness training. Adopt the SPAR approach I developed which means security preparedness and response training. We strive not just to make people aware, but prepare them and how to response to cybersecurity risk. Most training is driven by regulatory compliance and I promote designing the training around people.

I agree with this approach completely. Most awareness training today fails to account for the principles of human nature that so often limit success if they are ignored. I believe the model to build the awareness training on is based on getting out of your "comfort zone' which is mostly operating and training based on compliance rather than actual learning and improving. By getting out of your comfort zone, each person is more likely to discover their talents which often are unknown. Use learning-to better understand those talents and identify where and how they can be used to improve security awareness. Use skills-based training for performance improvement of the talents. Improving the behavior and performance in awareness is key!
