In my experience the world has moved away from just focussing on specific potential risks. These still have a place, however with recent years demonstrating the influence of HILP (High Impact Low Probability) events - the focus to me is more where is my Supply Chain vulnerable. Identifying which nodes / flows / materials have the greatest impact on the supply chain is key. Modelling the supply chain and building up a knowledge (through what-if scenarios and risk scoring) of where resilience is needed and what tolerances you need to build in to your Supply Chain.

One of the key strategic tasks on every Supply Chain Leader’s mind is create and sustain resilience in flow of goods, services and information. Demand Volatility, Inventory Destocking and stricter Regulatory Norms require supply chain professionals to think differently, proactively and just in case in some situations rather than just in time. While Inventory control, Cost Management and Customer Service are more critical than ever, a balancing act with objective of developing flexibility and adaptability is key when sensing demand volatility and reacting with supplies. As per my other comment, the key here is to focus redundancy and flexibility to where it matters (something identified in the Risk assessment stage). Then actually utilising the alternatives, there is no point having a list of secondary suppliers, alternative contract manufacturers, etc. if they are a paper exercise and come the worst finding out that they do not want to or can not work with you. Actively building relationships and putting volumes through these alternatives means that should the worst happen you have tried and tested flexibility.
