If it is small, it can be easily maintained and even replaced without affecting the other components of your system as long as it has well-defined contracts that you can test.

Consistency is important. It speeds up the development by simplifying developer decisions in many trivial cases of building the code and simplifies maintenance and understanding the code for the person who knows the used conventions and rules. It is possible to just get some existing coding standard and use them, but I my opinion it is better when standards are built on the existing practice of the team, reflecting conventions and rules that prove to be successful, and rejecting ones that do not. Of course, the developers should know and try to apply principles from other coding standards and see what is appropriate for the existing codebase. This way the coding standard is developed naturally describes exactly how code was written.

But be agile in a way which suits your org. Please don’t follow textbook agile practices because they never work. You are the best person to identify the tune of your org and it is best to lay down software practices which are tuned to your org.

I agree, an iterative approach is crucial, for any software project that's not trivial, IMHO. That said, I'd be wary of the Agile framework. If the point is iteration, there are a lot leaner ways of achieving that. Find the framework that's right for your situation, and be mindful of the overhead those frameworks inevitably add to the project. My own experience has shown me the cost (not just monetary) to benefit ratio is actually fairly poor when Agile is used.

I'm a great believer in KISS, "Keep It Simple Stupid". Don't make code more complicated than it needs to be. Don't design a system for some future requirement that might never come to pass. Well written, modular code with a decent set of unittests can easily be updated and refactored to meet new requirements as and when they are required.

I would consider using Data structures that can help me efficiently store my data but also make my lookup effective and easy if needed, or based on requirements. 2. use data structures that can be easily scalable based on your needs. 3. The same thing goes for your logic building, build it in a way that performs and follows the basic designing principles like scalability, modularity, and load balancing. 4. Agile is must, it teaches you to bend your logic/fixes as needed.

At the end of the day, it is important to recognize a couple of things. One, you need to be writing software that delivers value to the business' customers. But, if you only focus on that, you end up with software that is brittle and very difficult to change. Software must also be written knowing that it is going to live longer than you expect it to, it isn't just throwaway code that will be replaced in a year or two. Spend some time thinking about making the code flexible and evolvable. I worked on a project years ago where the focus was just on delivering new features, and the team had painted the code into a corner. Spend a bit of time thinking about design. You can't fully guess the future, but you can be prepared for its inevitability.

The most important skill I have found with regard to best practices that stand the test of time is to think through the problem simply, create simple solutions, don't get fancy, clear and concise solutions is the name of the game. If you ever find someone saying your working solution is just "too simple" then give them a strange look. It is better to start simple and have ample room to add onto than going overly complex or over-optimized and find that your code can't be easily changed without undoing your fancy code.
