Before making a new resource from scratch, look in various OER repositories for existing lesson plans that can be modified or remixed. This could save a lot of work. Always consider an audience with diverse social identities and with neurodiversity. OER can respond to calls for Inclusive Teaching faster than traditional textbooks and you can be part of helping all students feel like they belong in the classroom.

2 Design for adaptation and reuse

One of the main benefits of OERs is that they can be adapted and reused to suit different purposes, contexts, and levels of learners. However, this also requires that the OERs are designed in a way that facilitates adaptation and reuse. Some of the design features that can help are: using modular and flexible formats, such as HTML, XML, or PDF; providing clear and consistent metadata, such as title, author, license, and keywords; using open and interoperable standards, such as SCORM or IMS; and providing guidance and support for adaptation and reuse, such as templates, rubrics, or tutorials.

OERs can only have an impact if they are shared and disseminated widely among the intended users and beyond. Sharing and disseminating OERs can involve using various platforms, such as repositories, websites, social media, or newsletters; applying appropriate licenses, such as Creative Commons or GNU; and engaging with communities of practice, such as networks, forums, or events. Sharing and disseminating OERs can increase their visibility, reach, and feedback, as well as foster collaboration and innovation.

When possible disseminate on an OER platform and have your website point to it, so that all other campaigns point to the OER repository. This is important for a variety of reasons: 1. OER repositories (for example OER Commons, QUBES Hub, SERC, Merlot) will ask for the metadata needed for increased findability by other OER site users, Google searches, and OER metafinders. 2. OER repositories will help you select the sharing license that you feel most comfortable with. 3. Storing in one primary location means that updates can be done in only one place. Many repositories offer versioning so that all versions can be stored together and forks so that different adaptations - for example to meet different state standards - can be linked together.

5 Update and maintain regularly

OERs are not static or fixed products. They need to be updated and maintained regularly to ensure their currency, relevance, and quality. Updating and maintaining OERs can involve reviewing the content, format, metadata, and license of the OERs; incorporating feedback, suggestions, or new developments; and fixing errors, bugs, or broken links. Updating and maintaining OERs can also involve creating new versions, editions, or derivatives of the OERs to suit different needs or contexts.
