In my experience the clearest picture wins. The more you can do to explain why and how your goals directly impact the company and HR strategy, the better your employees will be able to connect it to their day to day work.

I agree with all the practices list it here but I don't feel that they are specific to remote employees. Sharing values and a vision, and enthusiasm for certain objectives is not dependent on physical location. Neither is involving employees in formulating goals, what providing feedback and updates, or encouraging learning or listening to your team members. However what becomes clear when we consider a remote collaboration is that indeed all those things are in the mind and the matter of mindset, and not a matter or physical space.
