Here's my understanding : 1. Use REST when you need a simple, lightweight architecture and want to expose data to a wide range of clients. Eg: Google Maps API. 2. gRPC provides very low latency and very high throughput, so if you need higher performance, like in streaming or real-time applications, use gRPC. Eg: YouTube live streaming. 3. GraphQL if you want to provide a flexible and customizable API, or in case you have a complex data model. Eg: GitHub API. 4. I've not worked on SOAP, but have seen people using it to integrate with existing enterprise applications and require reliability and security. Hope this helps! :)

Even though REST and SOAP are common web services, we should also consider gRPC and GraphQL for choosing from a modern development perspective. Below are the items that they can offer for an application: SOAP 1. Security 2. Integration of legacy systems 3. Strict Format (XML only) 4. Statefulness REST 1. Easy to learn for development teams 2. Most of the modern frameworks support this 3. Follow the 6 constraints to have a RESTful API GraphQL 1. Solves the problem of over and under-fetching of API calls in REST 2. Query language, get and modify only what you need. gRPC 1. Based on RPC framework and uses the binary format to send data to the server. 2. A recommended service for distributed architecture.

Through various projects, I’ve noticed that when an application requires heavy data interchange with numerous external systems, REST is often a reliable choice due to its widespread adoption and ease of use. However, if the communication needs to be highly efficient and quick, like in microservices communication, gRPC provides a significant advantage with its compact message format.

Once you have determined the requirements and constraints of your project, you can compare the advantages and disadvantages of SOAP and REST web service architectures and choose the one that best suits your criteria. For instance, if you need to transfer complex or large data sets that require validation and encoding, or ensure high security and reliability for critical or sensitive transactions, SOAP could be the better option. Alternatively, if you need to transfer simple or small data sets that can be represented in JSON or XML, achieve high performance and scalability for frequent or large requests, provide a user-friendly and intuitive interface, or develop and deploy your web service quickly and cheaply, then REST may be more suitable.
