Layer height of a part depends on its final application.Suppose for visualization prototypes the lower layer height may not be a considerable factor the limit may goes up to 0.4 mm again depends on nozzle diameter.Where as for functional parts which takes loads and stress ,lower layer thickness is preferred as it gives scope for proper adhesion.Reduction in layer height gives high surface finish where as higher limits leads to Coarse finish. Layer height depends on certain factors like . -Type of process . -Applicaton area of the part. -nozzle diameter. - Design and post processing methods.

I agree but want to add do not go over 80% of nozzle diameter, as example 0.4 nozzle 0.32 is the highest limit. If you know to calculate the full step and pitch gap use this gold numbers. Final one, some time high layer needs adjustment of print speed.
