If it's an Assignment work then purpose is always "give the producer what he wants" because producer always have some vague ideas in mind about the film he wants to make. In other case If the writer is writing his own script using his own sensibility then he need not to follow the trend or write with some purpose in mind. The only Purpose writer should keep in mind is engaging audience in his narration. Audience always appreciate out of the box ideas. The narration or idea should come from writers heart be it any dam genre.
The next thing you need to consider is the length of your idea. How much time do you need to tell your story effectively and satisfyingly? How many characters, subplots, and twists do you have? How complex is your world and your premise? The length of your idea will help you decide the size, structure, and budget of your format.
I agree but all of these statements can be broken if you have a brilliant and clear masterpiece. Nevertheless, you have to be able to make a landscape before starting to paint the Picasso or Salvador Dali style.
The last thing you need to consider is the marketability of your idea. How realistic are your chances of selling or producing your screenplay in the current industry? How competitive is your genre and your format? How original and appealing is your concept and your hook? The marketability of your idea will help you assess the demand, supply, and value of your format.
It often could be that somebody already developing absolutely same idea as yours. Even if it is a masterpiece. So the marketability is a challenge but not often is the way to follow the mainstream audience needs
Feature films are the most common and popular format for screenwriting ideas. They are usually between 90 and 120 pages long and follow a three-act structure. They are designed to be shown in theaters or streaming platforms and appeal to a wide or niche audience. They are also the most expensive and difficult to make, requiring a lot of resources, talent, and luck.
Short films are the opposite of feature films. They are usually between 5 and 30 pages long and follow a simple or unconventional structure. They are designed to be shown in festivals, online platforms, or as proof of concept. They appeal to a specific or experimental audience. They are also the cheapest and easiest to make, requiring less resources, talent, and luck.
In my experience it is also a good way to develop your skills before taking the feature films. Check how you characters developing on a short distance, check the conflicts and narrative.
