Generally the rule would be that higher ISO films (800, 1600) are smoother for portraits than smaller ISO (50, 100). It depends what type of portrait you are after. A strong personality would be best to be photographed with a strong side light and a 100 ISO film, while a child or a model with softer character would be suitable to be photographed in a diffuse lighting with a Kodak 400 Portra negative for example. Lower ISO would have fine grain compared to higher ISO, so knowing this technical differences would help us judging the right choice for the portrait we need to shoot.

Combinations of ages in the sunrise or sunset lighting would look very different taking into consideration haze or clear sky and geographic position. For example in Australia one photographer can obtain a strong, side harsh light in the morning compared to a Norway sky at the same time of the day, due to the Sun’s position and atmospheric conditions.
