1 On-off control

On-off control is the simplest and most basic electromechanical control method. It involves turning a device on or off based on a setpoint or a threshold. For example, a thermostat can use on-off control to switch a heater on or off depending on the room temperature. On-off control is easy to implement and understand, but it can cause oscillations, overshoots, and wear and tear on the device. It is suitable for applications that do not require precise or smooth control, such as lighting or ventilation.

With electromechanical control, use automation to increase switch reliability. Using innovative PLC programming is essential to enhance reliability. The mechanical attributes of a switch or sensor can decrease its reliability. Through automation control programming, we improve even simple start-stop circuits. One area to focus on is switch bounce, which occurs when pressing the switch once sends two or more signals to the controller instead of just one. Switch bounce can cause equipment to malfunction. Using a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) with a timer added in series on the rung, we can filter out any extra signals after the first signal caused by switch bounce.

Proportional control is a more advanced electromechanical control method that adjusts the output of a device proportionally to the error or the difference between the desired and the actual value. For example, a proportional controller can vary the speed of a motor based on the distance to a target. Consider safety, efficiency, reliability, cost-effectiveness, and several other considerations. One important consideration that design engineers sometimes overlook is the environment in which the equipment will be used. Over the decades, I have seen many examples of this. A wire manufacturer was having their controller lose their programs. The loss was due to no line filter on the controller power to stop voltage spikes caused when they tested wire insulation with high voltage. Harmonics was an issue there, too. Another example was a foundry with black metal dust floating around. The control panel’s cooling fan would draw the dust into the panel, shorting our electronic circuitry.
