What are the best co-creation methods for engaging urban communities?

Understanding the problem is half the solution, which means once we define the problem clearly, we can start looking for the best solution with citizens engagement as we should listen to their needs, requirements, expectations by meet people, have a workshop, interviews and discussion, this will help us to understand them and let people feel that they are important and part of the solution by their engagement.

In embarking on co-creation, a prerequisite is a crystal-clear, shared understanding of the problem at hand. This demands active engagement with the community to discern their needs, expectations, and perspectives. Employing diverse methods like interviews, surveys, workshops, or focus groups is crucial for robust data collection and analysis. The involvement of pertinent experts, authorities, and partners further enriches insights and resources. In my experience the challenges or day to day problems that citizens face are very different to the predictions or expectations of the technologists. To match back problem to solve to the ‘real’ needs of the citizen and likelihood of adoption the new technology there needs to be an expert triangulation of tech firms, trusted agencies (people) who truly understand the citizen need and process/business operation expertise.

A great way to learn about current challenges in communities is Utopia as Method. It works in co-creation with the people to come up with visions for the future. These visions have to be far away enough to be abstract and as much as possible detached from current trends. Psychological and sociological implications can then be analysed and therefore be a critique of the existing by highlighting flaws and injustices. That is a very powerful critique of existing societal models.

Once we define the problem, we can list all the solutions and choose the best one in term of QCD (Quality, Cost and delivery of the solution). We can perform brainstorming or prototyping with citizens, communities to engage them with our vision and best. solution. We should expect many different opinions and we should respect all of them.

The idea was to test things out and scale it to any other city in the world. It failed because the people were reasonably scare about data privacy and surveillance.
