Depending on who you want to attract, you should try to ensure your portfolio reflects this. I've found that by reviewing my portfolio every few months I can refine what is showcased as my best work for my desired audience. Additionally if I want to segment my audience I can always keep projects private and only direct those projects to potential clients I want to see it.

I've found it very helpful to not get pulled into certain trends. Shot's and sequences that may be very popular temporarily, but can block the your personal creative ability. These trends can lead to a rush of similar looking footage that could get lost in the crowd. Video is a expressive medium and I feel that making your shots speak for themselves adds more value overall.
