What are the best CAD tools for creating complex geometries?

Selecting the right tool here is critical. While Rhino is an entry level NURBS modeler, it lacks the necessary parametric foundation of Solidworks, Inventor, Catia or Creo, which are specifically devoted to creating 3D models of complex assemblies to be manufactured. Rhino is fine for simple part by part, non parametric designs, but does not have the utility of parametric modeling of complex assemblies necessary for commercial industrial design use.

I have tested a few software over the years and I stick to SolidWorks because I can design complex shapes and yet, integrate the engineering and manufacturing constraints. The goal of Industrial design is to produce a mass-manufactured product, so, integrating those constraints is a must for me and for the software I pick. Other software can be used for the generation of ideas or for presentation purposes.

Polygons and Generative tools are mainly used for end products within a digital universe, lacking the technical integration necessary for engineering use.

Most of the tools mentioned are not for Industrial Design process, but are used for presentation and simulation. While the attraction of animation and beautiful presentions is strong, the corr requirement of most industrial design work is to eventually produce a physical object.

VR tools are excellent for presenting and evaluating designs, but are rarely used as the primary design tool, as they lack integrative down-stream process integration functionality.

Before an approach or tool is selected, the end product use of the model must be understood. For industrial design use that will eventually be used of engineering documentation, tooled part creation, etc. A Nurbs Parasolid like that produced in Solidworks is the cleanest work path. Most of the other approaches described here are great for freeform modeling, but will require conversion and recreation in other modeling/engineering oriented software. Higher end work, like that used in the auto industry, demands even higher level Software like Catia, that integrates design, engineering, and simulation features within a simpler work path for highly complex products. Starting a design in the wrong package will result in rework.
