What are the best business networking insights for improving your sales strategy?

Today's competitive landscape calls for networking as an irreplaceable part of supercharging sales strategy. 1. Spend more time on forging quality connections over quantity. 2. Understanding the prospect's pain points and devising tailor-made solutions and communications around it. 3. Social media networking platform offers a broader platform to the sales and marketing community, using this to reach out to the right prospect with a clear objective is imperative. 4. "Consistency is the key" when it comes to business relations. 5. Lastly, be genuine in your efforts and promises. Improving your sales strategy requires the ability to listen to your clients' needs. It's important to avoid trying to be everything to everyone and instead focus on what your organization is good at. If your organization is not a good fit for the potential client, it's better to be honest and facilitate a warm handoff to a better fit. This approach demonstrates integrity, helps the individual and the other organization meet their needs, and may bring future clients to you. Most importantly, it shows that you genuinely care about the person rather than just making a sale. Remember you do not want to ruin your reputation for one sale but you rather show honesty that can lead to future sales.

Along with a clear vision, we should also focus on building good connections, even when potential clients' requirements differ from those of your team.

In Networking, the first thing I look for is Connectivity. When I first started out in Sales, I had a client talk to me about noting the Fish on the Wall. That is what he called it. Find something in the person’s office and connect with it . A picture, a piece of sports memorabilia re: golf, fishing, football, etc that you can ask them about and and discuss. The other thing you can do to connect, is to ask them how they got started in their Company. People love to talk about how they started their company. I’m addition to Connectivity, I’ve found that you have to differentiate yourself from any other person they have spoken with. In other words, be memorable . Learn their goals and needs, and what keeps them up at night. See their heart.

Networking is the only key for improvisation on sales. And remember sales does t have any rule book But do remember basic etiquette of networking. Do not ever introduce or talk about your product in first meeting , your body language should be such the person next shall ask about your work. And if the prospect is a soft lead a follow-up mail or text or call as per comfort levels should be done

In my experience first step is building trust and rapport by understanding need and pain points and if required be a collaborator by reaching out to others in your network. This would enhance your reach and provide broader customer base.

Effective networking requires patience and graceful follow-up. A single instance of impatience can have a negative impact; even after a meeting, we might miss an immediate sales target or lose a connection for future reference or referral. Therefore, it's essential to maintain politeness and calmness while networking.

In preparation, I carefully select the most relevant events and strategize to maximize my effectiveness: I tap into my network, establish prior contact with key speakers, and focus on 2-3 individuals while staying open to serendipity. I also get ready logistically and mentally, aiming for meaningful exchanges over quantity. The goal is to spark engaging conversations that will continue well after the event

A key part of effective networking is helping other businesspeople with their needs. That's why you'll find that the best networkers are often connectors who help others by referring customers, providing testimonials, or helping to promote events and other businesses in some way.

Networking is not a random activity. It requires some research and planning to make the most of your time and effort. Before you go to any event, do some homework on the attendees, the agenda, and the format. Find out who are the key influencers, decision-makers, and potential customers in the room, and prepare some questions or topics to start a conversation with them. Also, have a plan for how you will follow up with them after the event, and what actions you will take to move them along the sales cycle.

First, DO NOT SELL. Second, DO NOT SELL. Third ... OK, we get it. Networking is not about selling; it is and always has been about building solid relationships, about finding out how we can help others succeed, about finding out who they are and what they want. Having been an area director for nearly 10 years in BNI back in the early 2000s, I was privileged to learn from the masters. Like far too many, I thought I could just tell others all about me ... I mean, I paid for the membership, so ... Thank goodness for those so much wiser! They gave me some great lessons on listening, ones I still use. And listening is a skill well worth cultivating; it's still rare to find good listeners, but it helps in every aspect of networking.

Being genuinely interested in solving customer problems and offering realistic solutions is the most important part of building trust with a customer. Of course there are many other factors that would influence how much trust your customers have in you and your company but staying connected and engaged throughout the process is also extremely important.

How about 'Be genuinely curious and genuinely helpful'? Networking isn't about selling, especially not about selling yourself. It's about connecting people who can help each other, which may or may not include selling one of those people to the other. If you do that, you help people. You build their networks. You strengthen your own network and your own credibility. And you make them want to connect you with people you can help, or who can help you.

Likability is crucial in networking. While people may not remember every detail you share, they will certainly recall how you made them feel. Aim to be the person who elicits a smile at the thought of an encounter, whether it's due to your insightful comments, sense of humor, or simply your calming and inspiring presence. Leave a lasting, positive impression, and avoid being someone people prefer to avoid. However, while cultivating this likability, don’t lose sight of your objectives. Make sure to convey the key information you want others to remember about you and remain genuinely curious about your interlocutor.

If you were going to a job interview think about if You want to work For With them. Instead of will you get an offer. Yes be genuine and curious and Look at what is important to them. Their history, research then ask questions listen hear what they tell you. Have a conversation that involves what you can contribute to them to their company’s success. You are building rapport and remember you too are making a decision .

Following up is the second thing I learned about in BNI back about 20 years ago. I too often waited for others to do that, but over time I realized the power of being the one to reach out, to ask more questions, to find out what I could do for those I'd met at a networking event. It helped me to stand out in a positive and powerful way, something I'd hoped for and gone about doing all wrong until I got that great advice I wrote about in my earlier comment here. Know. Like. Trust. Start slowly. Build momentum the right way. Help others. Always something to remember, right?

Be consistent. Once you find a networking event that you like, attend regularly so that people begin to remember you, remember your name, your business, your value proposition. Be involved. Ask the organisers how you can assist them in running the events. It might be greeting people, helping to set up, preparing name badges, or other things, but it will get you known by the organisers and in turn you will be able to meet more people.

One approach that has proven successful is identifying referral partners who cater to the same client base without direct competition. For instance, a business consultant can be an excellent referral partner for a business service provider such as IT services or human resources. By setting up meetings with potential partners and sharing your ideas, you can explore opportunities to team up and pursue ventures together. This collaborative approach not only broadens your network but also opens doors to shared business prospects.

Networking is not a one-time event. It's a long-term process that requires consistent nurturing and leveraging of your network. To maintain and strengthen your relationships, you need to follow up regularly, provide value, and show appreciation. You can do this by sending personalized emails, sharing relevant content, giving referrals, or inviting them to other events. To leverage your network, you need to ask for referrals, introductions, or testimonials from your existing connections, and offer them the same in return. This way, you can expand your reach, increase your credibility, and generate more sales opportunities.

You need others to network, right? To foster a networking culture in my city, I'll initiate regular, themed networking events that cater to diverse industries, encouraging cross-sector collaboration. I'll facilitate mentorship pairings between seasoned and emerging professionals, and use social media groups to maintain engagement and share opportunities. Promoting a 'give first' approach, where sharing knowledge and resources is standard, will ensure a supportive community primed for mutual growth.

To up your networking game, turn to LinkedIn to learn from the pros. Identify successful networkers in your local area, connect with them, and discover the events they plan to attend. By joining the same gatherings, you get a front-row seat to observe and learn from the best. LinkedIn serves as a valuable resource for tapping into the expertise of seasoned networkers, providing a straightforward way to expand your knowledge and skills in the art of networking.
