What are the best assessment methods for student-centered learning?

The ideal approach depends on factors like learning goals, subject matter, and student age. Formative assessments like continuous feedback, self-assessment, and peer assessment engage students actively. Authentic assessments such as projects, portfolios, and performances allow real-world application. Alternative assessments like concept maps, digital storytelling, and debates foster critical thinking. Communicate clear objectives, involve students in design, provide timely feedback, and use technology effectively. Assessments should align with goals and cater to students' needs.

I think one of the best ways to inform instruction and gather feedback is through observation. Now that I'm outside of the classroom and developing the curriculum, I think there is so much value in observing the discussions and reasoning behind how students are learning and engaging in the learning experiences. Getting to know the student attitudes, thoughts and processes can better help you find misconceptions and adapt teaching practices. I think as teachers, sometimes we forget to tap into the voices of the students that we are trying to impact. We can do this by taking a step back from the scene becoming supporting actors, and listening to the student voice.

Formative assessment can be as simple as a checklist breaking down the various objectives within the standard. It is beneficial to begin with foundation skills required for standard mastery, as a student who lacks these will be hindered in growth within the standard. For example, a student who cannot tell time on a first grade level will be challenged in determining time elapsed on a third grade level. Additionally, it is key that a checklist incorporate higher level growth in the subject area. Some students will already be able to show mastery of a grade level standard before you begin teaching it. It is imperative to have processes to identify those students and to challenge them to the next level.

One of the greatest challenges educators face in developing quality learning assessment is in adequately interpreting the standard. First, know what it is you need to measure. Measuring ability to identify versus ability to synthesize will look vastly different. Second, remember that there are often many ways student mastery can be demonstrated. Be flexible within the realm of what best will showcase student achievement.

It is crucial to regularly vary assessment tasks to accommodate the diverse needs of my students. By offering a range of tasks, I ensure that each student is appropriately challenged and/or has opportunities to step outside their comfort zone. This approach fosters growth; students may develop new skills and perspectives, ultimately enhancing their overall learning experience.

Transitioning to more student centered assessment can seem daunting. Start with activities like class discussions and projects which naturally lend themselves to this. Have students collaborate on creating rubrics or success criteria to ensure they have a voice in the process. Students love to assess their peers. Use strong and weak work models (anonymous of course) to allow students to see what the project or writing should look like. You will have to make time to discuss respectful feedback and comments that are based on the criteria. Don't forget student self assessment. Students are capable of catching some of their own mistakes when they compare their work to rubrics and criteria.
