If you are talking about creating accurate floor plans of existing buildings, then some type of scanning device and CAD software can provide better accuracy. There is software for computer tablets that allows sketching room outlines and attaching photos and notes to the file. If that's not an option, then a range finder and tape measure along with establishing datum points of reference to take measurements from with the addition of site photos that are taken in a sequential order can help eliminate multiple visits. The best method is having a plan/system and not to value speed over accuracy. Lastly, some clients have larger margins of error than others, so you need to know the end goal for the plan to determine the precision needed.

A paper notebook & 2 pens, .07 & .05, or color are a good backup/primary tool. How many times does a battery die, measuring an 100,000 sf building? Sketchbooks are essential and required skill, maybe not Da Vinci level, at least legible to you. Then sit at an open desk & plug those numbers in. Bonus points if you have existing drawings printed out for reference.
