Having a pool of mentors is important in your career journey. You can learn collective wisdom from people who are ahead in their careers and you are trying to follow in their footsteps. Not all their advice is useful. So if you can observe patterns from their advice, there might be some truth to it. I tried to make leadership in the companies that I worked for as I mentor. As time goes by, I try to keep in touch with them. Sometimes, it is useful to have mentors who do not work in the same domain as you too since they are able to give different points of view (e.g. your business stakeholders) or even sponsor your promotion (by giving you chance to work on interest projects)

Data science field seems to be the top selected discipline for a multidisciplinary research or project. There is a lot of diversity in the application of data science in different domains (physics, engineering, biology, biotechnology…). So it is very important to expand your network to have knowledge about the different problems that the data science field is able to help in solving it.

As with any community, continually taking from others is not sustainable and not well received. Don't forget to pay it forward and contribute positively to help to those in your network! This can be really easy things like engaging with their content on LinkedIn, or something more involved like mentoring and helping those early in their career. This helps keep you top of mind while being viewed as a positive and engaged leader in the data space.
