4 How to choose the best network for IoT

To choose the best network for IoT connectivity, you need to consider several factors, such as the number and type of IoT devices, the data rate and volume, the power consumption and battery life, the mobility and location, the security and reliability, and the cost and scalability. For example, if you need to connect many devices that send small amounts of data infrequently, and that have low power consumption and long battery life, you may opt for a low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) such as LoRaWAN. However, if you need to connect fewer devices that send large amounts of data frequently, and that have high performance and mobility, you may opt for a cellular network such as 4G LTE or 5G.

With edge technologies, it is not just a question of a trade-off between optimised deployment, network scalability or quality of service and security, but it is also an issue of what kind of data you need to gather from end devices. Do you need to filter or "purify and clean" it before being transferred to the sink or the cloud? Do we need to intelligently aggregate it at an early and lower stage before sending it? The AI (Artificial Intelligence) will be pushed not only to hardware side (AI chip), which are going to be embedded in IoT devices, but also to the way how these devices collect and process the data and share it among them before sending it to the end device for visualisation or further processing.
