Most PLC platforms have ways to simulate the code within the PLC. However, none of the platforms have a way to simulate the physical environment that is critical for learning PLC Programming. Therefore, simulation platforms can aid in learning PLC Programming by allowing the users to experience (with limiation) what the PLC would do in a production environment. This offers a few advantages - 1. You can easily reconfigure the environment for a variety of challenges, 2. You're not having to purchase actual hardware (In some instances the PLC simulator and production simulator eliminate the need for hardware entierly) 3. You can tweak the systems to learn debugging which is very difficult to teach even on live systems,

These platforms provide a risk-free environment for learners to practice programming and troubleshooting without affecting real-world systems. However, challenges include potential disconnection from real-world hardware nuances, limiting practical application. The main challenge of any simulation is how close it will get the user to "the real thing." Automation simulations are no exception; you can run a PLC and test your code - be prepared to tweak it extensively despite simulation, testing, etc. To that point, inexpensive simulation tools will rarely be able to simulate the physics of a real production environment. As the price increases, so does complexity, the need to involve other disciplines, etc. For example, if you're looking to create a highly accurate simulation of an automated process, you can expect to need electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, process engineers, etc. The costs will increase quickly.

There is also a limit on how much code a simulation can handle effectively, especially if much of it is vertical, without many jumps and parallel functions.

The virtual commissioning tools is the future of PLC machines simulation, which brings close to real machine operation. It’s not new for robot programmers, they already might have used robot simulators (Roboguide for Fanuc robots) However it not exactly same in the real world but very closer than using traditional PLC simulation methods.

Virtual simulation may be expensive than traditional PLC simulation software’s. I recommend any Codesys based software for PLC which have inbuilt simulation PLC and HMI for free. A lot of learnings can be covered with this tool. To get more practical exposure then almost every company provides the training kits to buy. Hopefully it is cheaper when we make our own as per curriculum we design.

As I previously mentioned, you'll spend an extensive period of time configuring the simulation. It's possible that the platform provides examples, but the chances of them being relevant to what you're learning are low. Therefore, you'll spend quite a bit of time configuring what's needed to execute the simulation. Make sure that you balance that with actual PLC programming, reading up on best-practices, and understanding what the PLC software features are. It's easy to get lost in simulations and spend hours tweaking the simulation scenario instead of learning how to program automation equipment.

Blended learning: To provide a thorough educational experience, incorporate PLC simulations with conventional lectures, case studies, and demonstrations. Lab Exercises: To close the knowledge gap between theory and practice, design lab exercises that combine both simulation-based and real hardware-based tasks. Simulations are good, but keep in mind the fundamentals of PLC programming. You don't need to waste your time creating intricate scenarios (which is fun) to learn more PLC programming instructions. You can stick to running code, walking through it, and understanding how it executes. Seeing how conveyors interact certainly helps, but it's not necessary to grasp PLC programming.
