What are the benefits and challenges of using ETL tools for data conversion?

Data transformation is a crucial part of data analysis yet a time-consuming one. In order to speed up the process, two different approaches have been practiced: Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) and Extract-Load-Transform (ELT). Generally, ETL is widely used but in some cases ELT has been effective. Critical Analysis from my experience: Both ETL & ELT are processes for data integration. In ETL, data is moved from source to staging then into the data warehouse. ELT leverages the warehouse to do basic transformations. ETL helps with data privacy and can create compliant data before loading it into the data warehouse. ELT cannot ensure secure data. ETL can perform sophisticated data transformations and can be more cost-effective than ELT.

The biggest challege I've found is finding the balance between the lowest level of granular data (e.g. Invoice or cost center) while stitching in the enrichements required to deliver actiinable insights.

In my experience the benefits of using a good ETL tool, is the ease at which you can step in and out of your workflow and change an aspect of it (if you don’t get the expected results). The ease at which you should be able to (if signposted well) follow the workflow.
