Static routing is great for small internetworks where the topology and the equipment rarely or never change. Don’t even think about it for any production network with more than 2-3 layers and/or 5 routers

Depending on the equipment you’re using, dynamic routing can be simple to set up, or incredibly complex. For example: if your routers are all running Cisco IOS, the EIGRP protocol is a simple way to set up a good working dynamic routing environment. However, if you have, or plan to have, any non-Cisco IOS routers in the environment, your best (and possibly only) option is OSPF. OSPF is a standard routing protocol supported by nearly all makes and models of routers, but the setup is much more complicated and takes a lot more planning to create a robust, working environment.
