What are the benefits and challenges of using AI-powered incident management software?

Incident management involves the process of identifying, analyzing, and resolving incidents to restore services to normal operation as quickly as possible. It aims to minimize the impact of incidents on business operations and ensure service continuity.

The art of fighting fire in a gasoline-covered-suit with a bucket with a hole in the bottom. Such a thankless job most of the time; the buck always stops with Incident Management. CMDB not accurate? Change controls non-existent or ineffective? DR plans not yet established? Resiliency Tiers and their associated RTO/RPO values not defined? Service/Asset owners unknown? All known playbooks failed? Keep calm, and execute the plan. Scope the problem, engage the right folks, explore available options, make a risk-informed plan and over-communicate it, execute and always adjust as new exceptional information comes into frame.

From my experience, everyone can agree that "we need to make sure we control/manage/fill in the blank unplanned events that can cause disruption, degradation, or failure of an IT service or component to restore services as quickly as possible back to normal" However, defining "normal" and the pecking order slows restoration to a crawl if pre-planning of "what-ifs" have not been exercised.

AI is a powerful tool. We must remember though, it is a tool, not a human. Technology should never replace hard work. Programmers do an amazing job and make our lives easier through technological advancements. However, laziness is and always will be lazy. AI can significantly speed up MTTR, MTO, RPO, and every other three-letter acronym there is. However, humans can and will never be replaced completely. AI can do a lot of tasks, and a lot faster than humans, but I'll never believe AI can out think humans. Just my opinion.

I think of AI as doing human tasks in a FLASH—Faster, Leaner, more Agile, Secure, and Hassle-free. However, you cannot take away the "HI" or Human Intelligence out of the equation. So then, AI-powered incident management software should be FLASH-based if it is to benefit business processes, such as Incident Management.

Challenges include high initial setup costs, data privacy concerns, the complexity of integration with existing systems, and the need for constant updates to keep AI algorithms effective.

The challenge of using AI-powered incident management, IMHO, is becoming lazy and complacent. When I was in the Marine Corps, I was at Camp David. President Reagan quoted "trust, but verify". I grew up homeless for the first 16 years of my life on the streets of Miami, FL. My motto during that time and still is today, especially when it comes to technology, including Ai-powered anything, is "never trust, always verify". Once we trust anything AI-powered without validation, we're toast.

Over time stable data structures and semantics of incident process related inputs, operating/constraint variables like SLA targets and their relative importance, remediation efforts/costs for AI-recommendable incident remediation tasks, etc. are essential to have AI be of usable business impact and a performance enhancing tool. If stability and easy rentrainability for drift/change/renegotiation of these data is not possible/affordable, usefulness of AI will decrease/harm over time.

Choose software that aligns with your business needs, integrates easily with current systems, offers scalability, ensures data privacy, and has strong support and maintenance options.

Evaluate Features: Compare AI-powered incident management software based on features like automation capabilities, predictive analytics, scalability, and ease of integration. Conduct Proof of Concept: Test the software through a proof of concept to evaluate its effectiveness in addressing your organization's incident management challenges.

The best AI-powered incident management software should be chosen by what I call FLASH. It must be F-aster, L-eaner, A-gile, S-ecure, and H-assle-free. Anything else is just bloatware, IMHO.
