I have worked on SNMP and RMON for many years. The issue I see with both is their limitations to handle the new evolved networks. If we think RMON or SNMP can monitor a large cloud, then we need to re-think again. SNMP and RMON worked well before the cloud and the large data center inceptions, nowadays we need to have an active and alive monitoring system that can handle a muti-threaded streams and a large data integrity check.

SMON stands for Switch Monitoring, and it is a subset of RMON that focuses on monitoring switched networks. SMON can provide information on the status and configuration of switch ports, VLANs, and multicast groups, as well as the traffic and errors on each segment. My perspective is the same RMON, again RMON and SMON are very limited to few streams, but if you need to monitor the entire data center or the cloud; you are not going to get it from RMON/SMON/SNMP.

Can not scale. Nowadays providers are using gRPC, gNMI, and so on to monitor a heavy used live network. If you build your monitoring tools based on SNMP, you are going to face lots of major issues when you scale that network.
