A directing/dictatorial leadership approach can single handedly undermine delegated decision-making structures often found in management systems. Complex dynamic organisations. To overcome this, it helps to meet with the talent and ask them how do they do what they do and ask them what are the risks they see and what would be the solutions to these risks. Rather quickly they will come up with the idea to implement different measures to control these risks. It is then rather easy to "sell" the idea of implementing a management system that will work for them helping to implement the risk control measures they proposed.

I have worked in both the Quality Assurance area and in the HSE area. The body of knowledge for each is immense. And if one person is to handle both, both will suffer. Lets face it, most organizations have a QA staff of one or two. And most organizations have a EHS staff of one or two. A QHSE staff would probably be a staff of one or two. As the phrase so aptly states: jack of all trades, but master of none.
