Social responsibility is often referred to as corporate social responsibility (CSR), a term coined in 1953 by Howard Bowen. However, the roots of social responsibility go back to the late 1800s. A common example is worker welfare with concerns over factory working conditions and child labour. The original scope was narrow, focussed on reducing working hours, giving to charity, and philanthropy. Overtime, it has expanded to include things like environmental sustainability, ethical practices and social considerations.

The company considers all stakeholders instead of shareholders. Stakeholders are becoming more conscious of corporate activity's impact on the environment, society, and economy and the significance of global concerns like social justice and climate change. The profitability a company produces for its shareholders, or its financial performance, determines its success in a capitalist system. Key corporate decisions and strategic planning activities are typically carefully crafted to maximize earnings while minimizing expenses and risk.

The organization needs to have a life-giving purpose, e.g., solving a UN SDG, and aspire to deliver on it in the most effective way possible. 2. Individuals in the organization need to connect their personal purpose with the organization's purpose, so that the culture of the organization is a match for the triple bottom line approach.

Organizations can adopt a triple bottom line approach by creating a clear vision, mission, and values that reflect their commitment to social responsibility and corporate governance. They should also conduct a stakeholder analysis to recognize the needs, interests, and expectations of stakeholders. A materiality assessment should be done to determine the most significant economic, social, and environmental issues that are pertinent to their strategy, operations, and stakeholders.
