Where I work, we place great emphasis on getting things right the first time. Therefore, project management methodologies that allow the definition of clear goals, objectives, scope and success criteria play a big part in helping my organization achieve its vision. For example - A project management document that the R&D department heavily relies on is the product requirements traceability document. This is a document that helps to align stakeholders on the specifications of the product, and give R&D the direction on how to develop and test the product. This document is available to all stakeholders at all stages of the product's development to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

That makes sure that expectations are clearly established (in and out of R&D), anyone that needs to know is in the know, and everyone that DOESN'T want to know has that documented too. By structuring communications like this, you can simplify workflows, reduce noise, and build a model to leverage for future projects.
