What are the benefits of applying the single responsibility principle to your code?

SRP is the simplest principle to apply. It is a key entry for other principles. We need to apply it in all levels, in the types level, in the members, in the namespaces and in the services. One of its key succus factors is the ability to give the right name, one of the hardest skills. It implies the intentions of the purpose, the usage, what is the In, what is out.

When an application has multiple classes, each of them following this principle, then the applicable becomes more maintainable, easier to understand. The code quality of the application is better, thereby having fewer defects. Onboarding new members are easy, and they can start contributing much faster. Testing and writing test cases is much simpler

Single Responsibility Principal's applicability is not just restricted to functions or classes of a service, but it easily transcends to application level. Say, an application is divided into multiple services and this division has been done based on Domain Driven Design. Then, each domain service is adhering to SRP and changes to this domain will done without affecting other domain services.

In SRP, each class or module has only one reason to change, thus it enhances clarity and reduces the complexity. When each component is responsible for a single task, developers can easily comprehend its purpose and functionality without having to navigate through convoluted logic. This clarity fosters better collaboration among team members, as well as simplifies maintenance and debugging efforts.

E.g; in a banking app, instead of having a BankAccount class handling transactions, balance updates, and customer notifications, you can split these responsibilities into separate classes: TransactionManager, BalanceService, and NotificationService So, if you need to modify how transactions are processed, you only need to update the TransactionManager class, reducing the risk of inadvertently affecting balance updates or notifications. This separation of concerns makes your code more robust and easier to manage

Unlike most examples found online, SRP doesn't just apply to objects that have only one function to do, for example, connecting to Database, or sending an Email/Text Message. SRP is at the center of application design using OOAD and goes hand in hand with other SOLID principles like OCP. If we are to provide different algorithms to do the job and choose between different algorithms at run time, each algorithm object needs to follow SRP. For example, if we need to sort the objects and we can choose between Quick, Merge or Insertion Sort at run time, each sort type has to be implemented as SRP classes. Working with patterns like Strategy, Visitor and others, each strategy or Visitor object is considered as SRP object.

With clear and well-defined responsibilities, understanding the impact of changes becomes easier, as you can isolate the relevant components without affecting unrelated parts of the system. So, developers can make modifications more confidently, knowing that they are less likely to introduce unintended side effects.
