We could also aim for optimal CG and MACTOW/Trim setting, to avail greater aerodynamics which can yield reduced drag and enhanced sailing. This can be achieved by various methods including targeted belly usage as well as by an aimed cabin distribution.

Analytics is key to any form of optimisation for any airline. Analytics can help an airline in predictive maintenance, which in turn results in having a fleet which breaks down less and runs efficiently. Analytics can help an airline find out the right route for a flight and fly at the tight altitude and speed to burn optimum number of fuel, and analytics can help an airline load the plane with passengers and cargo for optimal fuel consumption. Having an airline data lake, is a key capability for many types of optimisation including fuel.

Mathematical models and algorithms do demonstrate fuel optimisation on paper. However in reality, the planned optimisation is almost never achieved. This is because of dynamic & ever changing operational, air traffic & environmental conditions, and more importantly crew / controller training & motivation. Therefore, even in this age where data can theoretically be leveraged to successfully achieve optimisation in most scenarios, a seasoned, trained and motivated pilot-controller combination will always achieve far better. Data or procedure driven fuel optimisation systems will continue to derive poor results till investments are made towards ensuring motivation, optimisation training and interaction between the controllers and pilots.
