What are the advantages of using Swagger for API testing?

Swagger is not a tool for testing APIs. We use swagger for documenting, visualizing Restful APIs. However Swagger has many advantages when it comes to API testing in conjuction with testing tools. For eg. 1. Documentation: swagger is a structured way to document the APIs. Which is very beneficial who wants to test it. It provides detailed information about the API endpoint, parameters, HTTP method, response and request body information, in addition to expected status codes implemented for the API. It also provides the information of data types for input data. We can use this information while testing API by ensuring it meets the expected criteria. If we are familiar with Swagger, as QA we can reduce the learning time.

Also when we have multiple interrelated APIs, its not a good way yo just to stick with swagger. Alternate approach: use OpenAPI Spec, load them to better tools: - Postman : quick tests with parameterization options. - JMeter / Rapid 7 - Performance tests. - Noswag.io - AutoGenerate Functional tests from swagger definition / Open API Spec.

I have used Swagger/Open-API with Rapid 7 Security Testing tool which directly accepts Swagger documentation URL (or Swagger JSON/YAML files) to run automated security tests against all the endpoints listed in the Swagger API Documentation. This also means that in case of any new addition or deletion of endpoints, manual changes to Automated Security Tests would not be required as it would automatically pick all the endpoints from the Swagger documentation.

On E2E level, we need multiple APIs and Endpoints to interact with each other. But primary purpose of Swagger is to Generate/Build individual microservices without dependencies. So E2E tests, or consumer contract tests are overkill using swagger hub tools.
