On large industrial projects BIM is invaluable for coordination of all design work by the site and facility designers (CSA), utility designers (MEP/FP), equipment vendors, and automation vendors. This ensures that all members of the design team can integrate their work, the lead design firm can determine which consultant gets priority, and the model can be searched for interferences. Interferences ten or fifteen years ago used to be a major headache and really difficult to find looking at hundreds upon hundreds of drawings trying to find them. Invariably they would only be found in the field where they are costly in $$ and schedule to determine a fix and make field changes, all without a domino effect on other trades.
