1 Blockchain and IAM challenges

Traditional IAM systems face several challenges, such as scalability, interoperability, security, and privacy. They often rely on centralized authorities, such as identity providers or cloud services, to store and manage user credentials and access policies. This creates a single point of failure, a risk of data breaches, and a lack of user control and consent. Moreover, users have to create and remember multiple passwords and usernames for different applications and platforms, which is inconvenient and insecure.

La gestión de identidades (IAM) en blockchain abarcan múltiples posibilidades, actualmente uno de los desafios más grandes a los que se enfreta la IAM en blockchain es en la adopción masiva, la web3 aún sigue siendo compleja para usuarios no técnicos o con un buen manejo de las tecnologías. Con la aparición del concepto de "account abstraction" podemos prever, que la adopción es cada vez más sencilla. La gestión de credenciales en el mundo blockchain es completamente diferente a lo que estamos acostumbrados actualemente. La blockchain permite el uso de la misma Wallet en diferentes dApps (Descentraliced Applications). La falta de concienciación y ataques de ingenieria social del robo de seed phrases aún siguen siendo un problema.

In such a system, users can create and manage their own digital identities, based on cryptographic keys and certificates, and store them on the blockchain. Aún están por explorar las soluciones de identidad blockchain traidas a un mundo tradicional Web2 o como me gusta llamarlo Web2.5 donde se mezcla en social login (Facebook, Twitter, Google, Microsoft,...) con la abstracción de cuentas, donde en el backend se está generando y asociando una Wallet a un Social Login. Este tipo de soluciones pueden llegar a volverse un SSO Masivo para todo internet, ya que el uso de la autenticación tradicional cada vez es más inseguro, no solo por los usuarios si no porque las empresas no siempre toman las debidas diligencias en ciberseguridad y no protegen la información de sus usuarios. Además, los Smart Contracts, abren la posibilidad de gestionar la relación entre usuario-app. Busquen > Block-Auth

La privacidad de la información, trazabilidad de toda acción del usuario, inmutabilidad, el uso de smart contracts en las relaciones con las aplicaciones y las empresas. El ejercicio de derechos de privacidad por ejemplo el RGPD Europeo. En cuanto a la seguridad: Se elimina la necesidad de usar contrase?as, criptografía avanzada para la identidad de usuarios, pudiendo usarse en el ámbito de usuario final o corporativo en aplicaciones internas corporativas. El anonimato se mantiene y en caso de necesidad de compartir datos estos son cifrados en todo momento. Additionally, regulation can be an issue due to the lack of clear rules and standards for digital identities and data on the blockchain. This can affect the legitimacy and accountability of the IAM system, especially for cross-border and cross-domain scenarios.

Blockchain technology is still an emerging and evolving field, and its applications and implications for IAM are not fully explored and understood. However, it is clear that it offers a promising and innovative approach to address some of the current and future challenges and opportunities of IAM.
