In today's day and age, it's often not clear if you have independent data sources. I remember when I was working at the US Army, I read a report where some consultants compared the accuracy of three different datasets of human resources data of the Army. The problem is - one dataset was the actual provenance of the data, and the others were copies. So the report was wrong - it should have told us to go to the data source of provenance. The reason the consultants made a mistake is they did not develop a diagram of how these three datasets were related.
