1 Using multiple master pages

You don't have to limit yourself to one master page per document. You can create as many master pages as you need, and assign them to different sections, chapters, or types of content. For example, you can have a master page for the cover, another one for the table of contents, and another one for the main body. To create a new master page, go to the Pages panel, click the New Master button, and name your master page. To apply a master page to a document page, drag and drop the master page icon onto the document page icon in the Pages panel.

2 Overriding master page items

Sometimes, you may want to modify or delete an item that is on a master page, such as a page number, a logo, or a header. You can do this by overriding the master page item on the document page. To override a master page item, hold down the Ctrl+Shift keys (or Command+Shift on Mac) and click on the item. This will release the item from the master page and make it editable on the document page. You can then move, resize, change, or delete the item as you wish.

3 Using primary text frames

A primary text frame is a special kind of text frame that is linked to the master page and can automatically adjust to the document page size and margins. A primary text frame is useful when you want to create a flexible layout that can adapt to different formats, such as print, web, or mobile.
