You need some advanced methods to select ideas that are based on clear criteria, systematic evaluation, and constructive feedback. In this article, you will learn about four advanced methods that you can use to select ideas: the NUF test, the COCD matrix, the Six Thinking Hats, and the Refined-Idea Canvas.

1 The NUF test

The NUF test is a quick and easy way to screen your ideas based on three criteria: novelty, usefulness, and feasibility. Novelty refers to how original and surprising your idea is. Usefulness refers to how well your idea solves the problem or meets the needs of your target audience. Feasibility refers to how realistic and practical your idea is to implement. To apply the NUF test, you simply rate each idea on a scale of 1 to 10 for each criterion, and then add up the scores. The higher the score, the more promising the idea.

My favorite method is to use scoresheets with clear metrics to evaluate the ideas at hand and decide which goes for further development. However, its important to get a diverse group of individuals doing the evaluation to maintain a less biased grouping. One key element I always include is 'gut feeling'. This is an additional boost a team member can use to boost an idea because of her/his gut feelings regardless of logical metrics.

2 The COCD matrix

The COCD matrix is a tool that helps you categorize your ideas based on two dimensions: originality and feasibility. Originality measures how innovative and unique your idea is. Feasibility measures how easy and viable your idea is to execute. To use the COCD matrix, you plot each idea on a grid with four quadrants: blue, yellow, red, and green. Blue ideas are highly original but low in feasibility. Yellow ideas are highly original and highly feasible. Red ideas are low in originality and low in feasibility. Green ideas are low in originality and high in feasibility. The COCD matrix helps you identify the most valuable ideas (yellow), the most challenging ideas (blue), the most conventional ideas (green), and the most irrelevant ideas (red).

3 The Six Thinking Hats

The Six Thinking Hats is a method that helps you evaluate your ideas from different perspectives by wearing different colored hats. Each hat represents a different mode of thinking: white (facts and data), red (emotions and feelings), black (risks and drawbacks), yellow (benefits and opportunities), green (creativity and alternatives), and blue (overview and process). To use the Six Thinking Hats, you assign a hat to each member of your team or yourself, and then discuss your ideas from that point of view. For example, if you wear the white hat, you focus on the evidence and information that support your idea. If you wear the red hat, you express how you feel about your idea. The Six Thinking Hats helps you avoid bias and groupthink, and encourages you to explore different aspects of your ideas.

While the mode of thinking was not used, different hats were used to represent different organizations or groups of people That my devices would have an impact on. Making sure each group had a benefit, increased the odds of success.

4 The Refined-Idea Canvas

The Refined-Idea Canvas is a tool that helps you refine and improve your ideas by answering nine questions that cover the key elements of your idea: problem, solution, value proposition, target market, customer segments, channels, revenue streams, cost structure, and key metrics. To use the Refined-Idea Canvas, you write down your answers to each question on a template or a sheet of paper, and then review and revise them based on feedback and validation. As innovation facilitator, I advise you to use a PUGH Matrix TO SELECT THE BEST OPTIONS. Here’s the 7 step process: 1. Identify Criteria: Start by determining the key criteria that are important for evaluating ideas. 2. Define a Reference Concept: Select one idea as the reference concept for comparison. 3. Generate Alternatives: List down the different alternative ideas you want to evaluate. 4. Compare Alternatives: Evaluate each alternative comparing them to the reference concept. 5. Weight the Criteria: Assign weight factors to reflect their relative priority. 6. Calculate the Total Score: Multiply the scores by the weight factors. 7. Select the Best Alternative: Compare the total scores toidentify the one with the highest score.
