Traditional survey methods vs. LiDAR technology in design projects: Feeling stuck?

There will always be a need for traditional methods for obvious reasons. We must ensure we continue to practice The skills as if we did not have advance technology such as lidar in the event there is a temporary issue or collapse of said technology. We are the carriers of the torch and the expertise of this generation will pay dividends to the future surveyors just as they payed it to ours.

Traditional survey methods involve using tools like theodolites, total stations, and tape measures to collect spatial data. Surveyors physically measure distances, angles, and elevations to create maps and plans. This approach can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, especially for large or complex sites. Accuracy depends heavily on the surveyor's skill and environmental conditions. While traditional surveys are well-understood and reliable, they may lack the efficiency and detail that modern technologies offer, making them less ideal for high-precision projects or large-scale designs.

Traditional method is more used in cadastral measurements. Lidar technology is used when there is the need for collecting as much data as possible. The Lidar tehchnology has just one downside. That is the price of surveying equipment (laser scanners, UAV lidar sensors) which cost a lot of money. Otherwise lidar technology is (and will be) the way to go in the future.

Traditional survey data may require additional processing and manual adjustments, which can complicate integration and extend project timelines. LiDAR’s compatibility with modern design software simplifies data integration, improving workflow efficiency and facilitating more accurate and dynamic project planning.

In Traditional method, Data is often recorded manually and may require significant effort to archive and maintain whereas, Data is digital and can be easily archived and accessed for future use, analysis, and comparison in LIDAR. In addition, LIDAR offers flexibility in combining with Other Remote Sensing Technologies. For example, In construction and civil engineering, integrating LIDAR with GPR(Ground Penetrating Radar) offers a comprehensive view by mapping surface topography and detecting subsurface anomalies like voids or utility lines. This combination enhances planning and helps avoid issues during excavation or construction.

LiDAR technology significantly accelerates the data collection process compared to traditional survey methods. With LiDAR, large areas can be surveyed in a fraction of the time it would take using manual surveying techniques. This speed not only shortens the project timeline but also allows for more iterative design processes and quicker decision-making. Traditional surveys may extend project durations due to their labor-intensive nature and potential for delays caused by environmental factors.
