Encountering pushback during a strategic shift is common; effectively leading through it requires finesse and strategy. To ease the transition:
- Engage in open dialogue. Discuss concerns and validate feelings to foster a supportive environment.
- Reiterate the vision. Remind the team of the project's end goals and how the changes align with them.
- Provide training and support. Ensure everyone has the resources they need to adapt confidently.

I’ve definitely faced resistance to change in my team, and what’s worked for me is really focusing on open, honest communication. I make it a point to explain why the change is happening and how it will ultimately benefit everyone, which helps ease some of the initial pushback. One thing that’s been helpful is involving team members early on, asking for their input and feedback. It gives them a sense of ownership and makes the transition feel more collaborative. I also try to check in regularly to see how they’re adjusting and to offer support if needed. Celebrating small wins along the way has also been key in keeping morale up during the process.

Navigating team resistance to strategic change mid-project requires a balance of empathy, communication, and decisive action. 1. Open Dialogue: I would begin by engaging the team in a transparent discussion to understand their concerns. Listening to their viewpoints can help address these issues. 2. Clear Rationale: I would clearly explain the reasons behind the strategic change—how it aligns with long-term goals, improves outcomes. 3. Involvement in Planning: I would involve the team in re-evaluating the project plan. This shared ownership can ease resistance and encourage buy-in for the new direction. 4. Support and Training: I’d offer additional training or support to help the team transition smoothly.

In my experience where pushback to strategic change occurs mid cycle there are a number of things to do:- 1) Consultation: It is important to engage Team members to understand what their concerns are and to establish if these had been raised earlier or identified as Project Risks 2) Issue Analysis: Once the issues have been identified then various options for resolution need to be reviewed and determined 3) Buy In: Engagement with relevant team members and /or other Statkeholders to seek their buy in to the resolutions 4) Communication: Clarity of the way forward and how it links to the strategic direction and delivery of the project’s goals should then be provided 5) Review / Monitoring: Going forward to determine if issue resolved

In my experience, resistance often arises from a lack of communication and connect. Effective strategic change management requires leading with team buy-in, ensuring complete clarity on the reasons for the change, supported by data. What helps me is reinforcing that we are in this together; it’s not a one-sided effort. Sometimes, resistance stems from a lack of perspective or experience, and coaching can help address these gaps.
