Team members are resistant to new technologies in your IT strategy. How will you overcome their reluctance?

Our hopes can only be addressed by changes. Hence, new technologies are bound to come up in the natural efforts towards making products better or making better alternatives. Therefore, new technologies will always come with some form of resistance. If you are blessed with experience as a Lead/Manager, you should engage the team members and use story (experience) telling to show how the existing technology they are used was once resisted. As a follow up, provide a safe space for them to review and try out these new technologies.

People resist everything that they do not know, do not understand or see no value add in it. And it is true that there is a lot of useless or even damaging technology. It is a duty of a manager to first make sure that the technology really serves the needs of a team and the needs of the key customers. Then the technology needs to be well introduced from a socio-economic point of view, and at the end, people need to be well trained to maximise the use of the new technology and also have a chance to give their feedback. This is the minimum prerequisite to make it successful.

Team members do not offer resistance to learning that is going to enhance the career that they have envisaged for themselves - hence if the learning is not inline with their career path then it is a matter of explaining how the learning is essential for the company and as a professional why they need to still acquire that skill - i guess giving the necessary respect to every team members time and effort is the only way to convince and remove this resistance.

To ensure IT and business objectives are aligned, it's essential to: 1. Clearly communicate the mission, vision, and core values to team members. 2. Emphasize the importance of adapting to evolving technology trends. 3. Provide comprehensive training and support for skill development. 4. Lead by example, recognizing and rewarding team members' efforts and achievements. 5. Regularly reviewing and updating IT strategies to ensure alignment with business objectives. 6. Encouraging open communication, feedback, and collaboration among team members. By following these steps, you can create a high-performing team that drives business success through technology.

If an IT strategy is in the making it must be part of bigger and broader business / technology transformation initiative driven by clear ROI and benefits / incentives to all stakeholders. Team members are definitive part of the critical stakeholder matrix and hence they mush have been part of the benefit and contribution mapping. Their contribution will come in terms of alignment to new technology which will generate additional value to the firm which in turn will return back to them as incentives, career progression or other benefits. If this is clearly communicated then any resistant team member can be convinced. If this was not vivid then the broader change management, adoption or strategy making is at fault - nothing on team members !!

Very important too is to engage the team members for an understanding of the values of the strategy being implemented. Communicate the strategy and welcome superior arguements from team members. This will enable buy-in and confidence to support the implementation.

I believe IT Strategy is about achieving specific objectives, goals, or outcomes related to the overall business environment. This could be lowering ownership costs, creating greater efficiency, enabling new capability, a broader business strategy, et. al. Technology can (and will change). It's about what it will enable for the IT team and/or the business (i.e. value) and why the change. Change can be uncomfortable. I found it helps to engage the team early when possible in selection. Guide them to recognize the value. Resistors will often point out shortcomings. Embrace that conversation. They may find things to consider. One can encourage ownership of the value...you can make them part of the solution.

Agree with comprehensive training to ensure team members are well engaged and feel confident to provide support. Ensure service desk/ help desk are provided necessary training as they are outward customer facing 1st line support. Also do a review of the training after an agreed period of time for feedback, my personal choice is 3 months and then again in 6 months time

Always one need to lead by example as first step is always difficult. Once path is set it is easy for others to follow. Any changes or doing thing in different way, always gets into resistance mode, but when we set an example , it is easy for other to follow.

While all strategies definitely help, I have personally seen this specific area as a game changer. Having champions help break the chasm and foster early adopters mindset. People come forward and start adopting or ask for help. Augment help with training in parallel to build trust and faith in the thought process and pave the way for easy adoption.
