A team member is slacking off on a shared project. How will you motivate them to contribute effectively?
When a team member isn't pulling their weight, it's crucial to inspire their active participation. To turn things around:
- Discuss the issue privately to understand any underlying problems and express your concerns.
- Set clear, achievable goals to provide direction and a sense of accomplishment.
- Recognize their efforts and contributions to reinforce positive behavior and commitment.

Communicate openly ??? by addressing the importance of their role in the project and how team success relies on everyone’s input. Encourage their strengths, offer support, and remind them that shared goals lead to shared wins! If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. – Sethunath, HRBP ??

Encouraging a team member to contribute fully requires a supportive and solution-oriented approach: 1. Private Discussion: I address the issue one-on-one to understand any challenges they may be facing and to express my concerns constructively. 2. Set Clear Goals: Together, we outline achievable goals to give them direction and a sense of progress, which boosts confidence and accountability. 3. Acknowledge Efforts: I recognize their contributions to reinforce positive behaviors and show appreciation, motivating them to stay engaged. This method fosters a respectful environment where team members feel supported and empowered to step up and succeed.

Open the conversation and try to understand what's going on on their side? Maybe they have something going on in their personal life? Maybe they are navigating challenges on another project? What can you do together to make it easier for both of you to work towards project success? Even if they say there is nothing going on, it might be because they are not willing to share. Never assume to know what's going on in another person's life or career. Give a kind nudge and focus on the positive, give encouragement and create an environment of trust. You gain trust, by giving trust.

When a team member's contribution is dwindling, it's an opportunity to re-engage them thoughtfully. I’d start with a private chat to genuinely understand any challenges they're facing, from workload to personal setbacks. Then, I'd set clear, collaborative goals that tap into their strengths and align with team objectives, helping them see the impact of their work. Celebrating even small wins can rekindle their enthusiasm and affirm their value. Together, we’d work toward a supportive, high-energy environment where everyone’s contributions matter.
