I believe culture is about people and how we foster a culture, rather than engineer or mandate one. This starts by setting a personal example. IT Operations is all about communication and sharing/documenting knowledge. Any service that is siloed by an individual service owner, is a risk. Plan sharing sessions, where team members can present a service they own. Allow peers to contribute and challenge to improve it. Test documentation and plans before they are needed. IT Operations is a team sport, it can’t be successful with individuals alone.

ITIL’s Service Value System (SVS) and Knowledge Management support shared goals and accessible information, while DevOps and Agile practices like CI/CD and daily stand-ups foster cross-functional engagement and real-time feedback. Lean principles help streamline workflows, and tools like Confluence or Microsoft Teams enhance communication. Emphasizing Change Management, Continual Service Improvement (CSI), and blameless postmortems creates a learning environment focused on iterative improvement and shared accountability, resulting in a resilient, aligned, and collaborative IT culture.

In my experience, fostering collaboration in an IT team starts with creating a safe space for open dialogue. I encourage regular check-ins where team members can share updates, ideas, or any roadblocks they’re facing. Adopting tools like Microsoft Teams and Jira has also helped streamline our project workflows and made it easy for everyone to stay on the same page. Celebrating both big and small wins as a team has boosted morale and reinforced the importance of working together. It’s all about building trust and valuing each team member’s contributions.

Due to my latest experience, open communication to leverage true real life information is a great means. If you are also the creator of the system you are providing services for you should keep a perspective from end-user corner, understand the real experience and adopt accordingly. The love for your creation should not blind you and be a blocker against the truth.

Monthly Lunch Meetings: Host casual virtual lunches with no work discussions to strengthen personal connections. Regular Check-Ins: Schedule consistent one-on-ones and team meetings for open communication. Collaborative Tools: Use platforms like Teams or Zoom for casual interactions and teamwork require cameras to be turned on. Recognition Programs: Celebrate achievements publicly to boost morale. Knowledge Sharing: Take turns having team members teach a skill or knowledge sharing lesson. Feedback Loop: Encourage employees to share feedback on collaboration efforts.
