This is a discussion that comes up a lot. Safety can not be compromised. As part of the storming process of change safety will be used by some people as a reason you can apply lean tools. As a practitioner you need to be ready for this position and demonstrate solution that dose not compromise safety.

Lean manufacturing focuses on creating clean, organized, and safe work environments. It emphasizes clear signage and safety barriers to prevent accidents. The Lean approach naturally includes safety as part of its culture, ensuring that the workplace is efficient and secure without needing extra investments in safety measures.

With fast growing trends/technologies in automotive sector and very tight deadlines, designing a part to keep it as light as possible without affecting its performance is a big task in-itself! Just choosing the right material is not often sufficient when it comes to balance the safety, cost and weight at the same time. Some of the ways are: shape , size, & topology optimizations etc. But these individually are time consuming and hence, I often prefer to perform DOE studies using different tools based on its application.
