Starting your teaching journey, how can you establish strong connections with students and parents?

Understand your students; have a discussion with each to learn about their family backgrounds and the type of parent they have and the culture. This helps tailor your approach to each student's needs. Communicate regularly with parents, sharing updates on progress and any concerns. Be approachable and open to feedback, fostering a collaborative environment. Show genuine interest in students' lives and achievements, both academic and personal. Establish clear, consistent communication channels through emails, newsletters, or meetings. Engage parents in school activities and encourage their involvement. Building trust and rapport ensures a supportive, connected community.

When I started my teaching journey, one thing that I had made clear in my mind was that there should be a clear balance between the student and their parents’ perspective. Have clear open communication with both students and their parents. Try to understand the thing from the student and parent’s points of view. Make a clear check between the parent's and student's expectations of you as a teacher. Discuss the capabilities od student with their parents.

Students connect with the teacher when they realize we genuinely care about them. Being a teacher is much more than teaching content; it's about working with human beings holistically. Listening to them, welcoming them, and having fun with them is also part of my day, and this combination brings us closer, creating bonds of affection. This is not peculiar to new teachers alone but to all teachers. In marketing, we talk about customer insights, so in academia, there is a need for student insights. Students and parents are stakeholders in every institution, just like we have different stakeholders in the industry. In the same way that CEOs and other staff engage with their stakeholders, teachers must engage with students and their parents. The relationship should be symbiotic. Teachers should not just be interested in the academic performance of their students; they should also know about other moderating/mediating variables that can affect academic performance. This is only possible when they get close to them; they should be seen as their children, brothers, and sisters.

Transparent and proactive communication is essential for cultivating trust and collaboration with both students and parents. Establish clear communication channels, such as newsletters, class websites, and virtual platforms, to share important updates, assignments, and educational resources. This always instills confidence in parents and assures them that their child's teacher knows his/student.
