Shy students in your virtual classroom struggle to participate. How can you empower them to engage actively?

Usually, teachers make the mistake of equating participation with verbal participation. Shy students might be uncomfortable with verbally expressing their viewpoints, they, however, are fine with other participation modes. I cannot talk about anyone else. However, during the Covid-19 phase, I often used to tell students to write on specific issues. No wonder that the otherwise shy students used to excel in those written assignments. Similarly, I know teachers who motivated students to draw or create pieces of art to articulate their viewpoints. As teachers, we must ensure that we cater to the strong areas of all our students. While I am aware about the difficulties involved, there are no alternatives if we wish to add value for students.

Consider implementing strategies that gradually ease students into participation. Use smaller breakout rooms for discussions, where the more intimate setting can make them feel less intimidated. Incorporate anonymous polling or chat features for initial engagement, allowing shy students to voice their opinions without the spotlight. By combining trust-building with gradual engagement techniques, you can create an environment where all students feel empowered to contribute actively.

Quanto mais estratégias adotamos para incentivar e dar seguran?a aos alunos mais tímidos em suas participa??es, melhor. Agrupamentos diferenciados, com diversas propostas de atividades e objetivos variados, devem ser considerados nessas situa??es, contando com a presen?a de professores e tutores, ou n?o. Porque, dessa forma, podemos identificar em quais situa??es esses alunos se sentem mais a vontade, e podemos trabalhar para desenvolver suas habilidades.

Algunos estudiantes pueden ser más introvertidos y eso no quiere decir que no estén involucrados o que no estén aprendiendo. Hacer un seguimiento de entradas al campus puede ser un indicador interesante... Revisar también sus aportes: suelen ser muy significativos aunque breves y puntuales... La s propuestas deben invitar a todos: especialmente promover la diversidad de miradas y el respeto. Incluir a todos es respetar también la elección de observar más y hacer aportes puntuales.
