These issues can be navigated by fostering mutual respect irrespective of ranks. By promoting open communication. Regular meet ups (horizontal inclusiveness) so that the gap can be bridged between higher authorities and junior faculties. Respect for different perspectives. Promoting ideas and creativity of everyone and giving autonomy to them for handling responsibilities but through proper mentorship and development programs. And last but very important the optimistic approach of dealing with things and people.

Power dynamics are inherent in higher education and often times a diversity of perspectives is not part of the decision making process. Ethical decision making requires diverse perspectives with end users in mind. Who benefits and how? Who is harmed and how? Who should benefit and why? It is imperative to understand who benefits by a particular decision in higher education and who does not. Students, as an example, are a key stakeholder and user but rarely part of many decisions in higher education.

I'm the junior faculty in my department. But the categorical division of juniors and seniors have never been an obstacle for me. Despite being a junior, I've been able to create my own space in my department, maintaining my connections with colleagues well. I've been able to prove myself professionally in many ways. The "seniors" also need the credit for maintaining power dynamics. A special mention to our Head of the Department, who is always a source of support and encouragement for me. Clear communication will help to maintain friendly relations despite the presence of power dynamics in work spaces.

In my experience, performance is all that matters, regardless of sector. Ensure you become better each day. Eventually, no power-dynamics can leave value on the table... performance wins!

When I was an assistant professor I was made aware of my status at one institution by full-professors in the department. I carried that mindset when I left that institution and went to another institution. The mindset was to realize the dynamics between other people in the department and stay out of issues that would appear that I was taking sides with or against those that were involved in the dynamics. Now that I am a full-professor and department Chair, I still keep that mindset but I am not afraid of getting involved in the dynamics and losing my job as I was when I was an assistant professor.
